Transport Minister Hon Rita Saffioti has announced that a new, bigger Department of Transport Driver and Vehicles Services (DVS) centre will open in Butler on 22 May 2023, delivering reduced wait times and better access than the current Joondalup centre it will replace.
The government media statement published on Monday 1 May 2023 (below) says an internal review found the Joondalup DVS – which will close at 4:30pm on Friday, 19 May 2023 - is no longer fit-for-purpose for Perth’s expanding north-west metropolitan region.
The MTA congratulates Minister Saffioti and the departmental staff involved in making decisions that respond to WA’s changing demographics and service needs.

New Department of Transport licensing centre set to open in Butler
Monday, 1 May 2023
New Butler Driver and Vehicle Services centre opens 22 May 2023
Bigger centre will service the growing north-west metro region
New centre will replace the existing Joondalup DVS centre which is no longer fit for purpose
Communities in Perth's northern suburbs will soon have access to a new Driver and Vehicles Services (DVS) centre, with Department of Transport opening the doors to a new facility in Butler on 22 May 2023.
The new centre will provide licensing services and practical driving assessments (PDAs), and better cater to the needs of Perth's expanding north-west metropolitan region.
The Butler Boulevard facility will replace the Joondalup DVS centre after a review found the Boas Avenue site was not big enough to cater for population growth in Perth's northern corridor.
Northern suburbs customers and DoT staff will benefit from modern amenities at the Butler DVS centre including reduced waiting times with the introduction of a new concierge model allowing customers to perform simple transactions on DoTDirect rather than wait in a queue.
The Butler DVS centre has free parking, is located along the 484 bus route and is an 850 metre walk from Butler Station, providing easy access for staff and customers driving or using public transport.
Joondalup DVS centre will close for business at 4.30pm on Friday, 19 May 2023.
Comments attributed to Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:
"The Department of Transport has created a flagship service centre to cater for customers in the expanding northern suburbs following a review that found the Joondalup centre that opened in April 2002 was no longer fit for purpose.
"The move to Butler will provide improved amenities for both DoT customers and staff, and changes to DoT's concierge services in-centre are expected to reduce wait times and deliver a better customer service experience.
"While the Joondalup site is no longer fit for purpose as a DVS centre, the Department of Transport will be assessing its potential future use, including to support the growing demand for driving tests and assessments in WA."
