Greater tyre choice provides flexibility to PBS operators and Tyre Dealers

The work of the MTA advocacy and policy team has again contributed to a significant step forward for members that operate Performance Based Standards (PBS) vehicles.

As of 1 December 2022, PBS vehicles will be able to use a broader range of tyres, enabling the PBS scheme to better support and promote the next generation of smarter, safer and more productive vehicles.

Announcing the news, National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) CEO Sal Petroccitto said the move will break down barriers and make it easier for operators to get on with doing business.

MTA Senior Division Manager, Graham Cawley explained the change is very positive for industry, removing unnecessarily restrictive and costly requirements to use specific tyre brands on PBS vehicles and enable operators to shop around.

“Our members asked us to lobby for more flexibility, so it is great to achieve such a sensible and practical outcome without compromising safety, “ Mr Cawley said.

“For individuals, the change will allow operators of PBS vehicles to fit any brand and model of tyre as long as it meets the relevant Standards.”

“But at a broader industry level, this policy change will also remove a major impediment to innovation in tyre technology while simultaneously encouraging a greater uptake of the PBS scheme,” Mr Cawley said.

Although WA is not a signatory to the NHVR, Main Roads WA has confirmed that we will be adopting the same approach as the NHVR, as outlined.

The NHVR will be holding a series of webinars in the coming weeks to provide an overview of the generic tyre approach. To register for a webinar or learn more about the generic tyre approach, please visit www.nhvr.gov.au/gta
