Congratulations to Jacob Whiteside: Another Gold Medal for MTA WA Training!

We’re thrilled to celebrate Jacob Whiteside’s recent achievement at the World Skills Competition, where he earned a gold medal and the opportunity to represent Western Australia at next year’s national competition. This marks another gold for MTA WA Training, which has consistently produced top-tier competitors, including two gold medalists over the past two consecutive years.

Jacob competed in the Light Vehicle category, tackling a range of challenging circuits, including diagnostics, basic tools, cooling systems, brakes, steering and suspension, vehicle inspections, and timing belt changes. Among these, electrical diagnosis proved to be particularly demanding. Yet, Jacob relished the challenge, stating, “I love this sort of stuff— I love finding out why it’s not working.”

His enthusiasm for the craft is matched by his respect for the training he’s received. Jacob praised his employer for instilling a disciplined approach to problem-solving: “Everything has a reason,” he reiterated.

Reflecting on his experience, Jacob shared, “It’s such an exciting feeling and I’m extremely proud. I think every apprentice should be doing it. The pressure gives you a good idea of where you’re at so that you can go and improve yourself.”

He also noted how the MTA WA’s detailed modules and delivery have been instrumental in his success. As a visual learner, Jacob found the in-depth approach particularly effective: “I think that’s brilliant.”

Congratulations, Jacob— we wish you continued success as you prepare for the national stage!
