A WIN for Industry and consumers through odometer record on DoTDirect* and reduced Licence Centre congestion
A WIN for Industry: Enhanced Odometer Records on DoTDirect and Reduced Congestion at Licensing Centers
The MTA WA Membership and Industry Engagement Team is thrilled to announce several positive policy outcomes from our collaboration with the Department of Transport WA (DoT).
Key achievements include:
- Odometer Records on DoTDirect: MTA WA alerted the DoT to an increase in odometer tampering and as a result, odometer readings will now be displayed on DoTDirect offering greater transparency for industry and consumers. This allows anyone to check the last recorded odometer reading of a vehicle for sale, provided it has been inspected by an Authorised Inspection Station.
- Increased Access to Dealer Online System (DOS): In response to our advocacy, the DoT has committed to a trial to make it easier for more dealers to access the DOS by reducing the monthly transaction requirement from 25 to 15, thereby helping to alleviate congestion at licensing centres.
These developments represent significant progress for our industry and provide tangible benefits for businesses, ensuring greater transparency and efficiency in vehicle transactions.

Dealer Online
The Department of Transport (DoT) is commencing a trial to examine entry eligibility for the DoT’s Dealer Online system. The trial will be commencing shortly and running for the full year of 2025 and will be looking at benefits to both businesses and the DoT as well as support requirements. The DoT will be directly inviting select dealerships to apply for consideration to participate in the trial. Applicants will be required to meet standard entry conditions – including dealer licence, suitable premises, fit and proper personnel evaluation and necessary insurances.
*Odometer look up online
The online vehicle registration look up feature on the Department of Transport’s website will now display the last recorded odometer reading for a vehicle that has been inspected through DoT and its Authorised Inspection Stations. This will include vehicles that have a mandatory inspection requirement such as buses, taxis and rideshare, as well as those inspected in response to a defect notice or Written-Off Vehicle roadworthy test. DoT makes no guarantee as to the accuracy of odometer readings. It is recommended that customers view the vehicle's log book and service history and make their own enquiries as to the vehicle's odometer reading. If the odometer reading is not present, there have been no readings provided to DoT.
Multi-factor Authentication is coming
The Department of Transport (DoT) will be introducing Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) access to systems currently used by businesses, including Dealer Online and the Vehicle Inspection System. MFA is already in place with many online access services on the internet and is an important step to prevent risk of data breaches. The new DoT MFA in consistent with security steps that the State Government is applying to all publicly accessible systems and enhances safety for both the private information held in records and legitimate business users. The DoT is now providing advice to business and system users of how access will be enhanced and asking for business feedback on their individual situation. The MFA program is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2024.
