The Minister for Commerce has partnered with the MTA WA to launch an important new consumer protection initiative – and delivered a fine example of how all stakeholders benefit when government works positively and openly with our industry peak body.
Minister Sue Ellery’s official announcement of the “Don’t be taken for a ride – used car buyer’s checklist” explains the tool was developed in collaboration with the MTA to help protect used car buyers from online scams and being sold vehicles that are over-priced or unsafe.
The one-page checklist makes it easy for buyers to compare the value and safety of two vehicles by ticking off 14 simple checks, starting with a $2 Personal Property and Security Register (PPSR) search.
As well as practical actions such as confirming that lights, seatbelts and tyres are in good working order, the document includes important information including the fact that buying a vehicle from a dealer offers the consumer legal protections that do not apply to private sellers.
Graham Cawley from the MTA WA said it was excellent that staff from Minister Ellery’s Office and DMIRS consulted with the peak body early and genuinely welcomed its guidance and feedback.
The result of the collaboration is a valuable tool that will help consumers, government and the hard-working women and men in WA’s diverse motor trade.
